The good the bad and the ugly I63

Well since the multiplay forums no longer exist we mays well have it here!
Good
Having a few drinks with everyone at pub quiz.
Only playing a few drop in games of pubg instead of every hour for the whole weekend
Scrawl that was a hilarious game, some people are pretty messed up!
Mini game of D&D was a nice change of pace for a couple hours.
Quejacker chicken curry was pretty nice.
TI finals on the main stage was worth watching until 4.20am
Having mags spare duvet to sleep on, did not wake up sleeping on the concrete once!
Hire pc was great once again.
Winning something in the raffle (very minor something but it still counts!)
Playing on a vive in the main hall swinging two lightsabers around!Bad
The initial que to pick up the hire pc, seemed to take for bloody ever! (but I did enjoy the que since I was next to a load of tf2 players)
I can not actually recall anything which was bad this year, didn't even have any nasty hangovers!
Vaette not making it (cant blame that on the lan)Ugly
The toilets as always. -
"toilets as always" That's just cos you don't take that extra 30 sec to walk to the toilets no one uses Bob!
-
They got rid of the Multiplay forums?! Christ!
-
Mulitplay has been sold a second time this time it was split into two, server-side and event side, the server-side got the forums.
-
The weird thing is that apparently Unity3D, the game engine company, bought the event business. They are super-competent when it comes to tech, but I do wonder whether they are doing some eSports push or something with the lan events? Either way, them being otherwise competent does make things a bit calmer.
How was the quiz itself? A few drinks always good, but it was a bit of an off year last year so I'm hoping to hear that they are back to their usual form now?
-
Unless they're planning to put a shitton of money into Esports no one will pay attention though. Plenty of bigger prizes at better tournaments.
-
Their main competitor is Epic though (in that Unreal and Unity engines are the two first choices for games), maybe they are looking to pull a Fortnite and are leveraging existing lan events for a foothold into the competitive credibility end. We'll see, perhaps we'll all play a Unity knockoff of the latest thing next year

It was £30k for CS:GO, and high numbers for a few other games. Not TI levels by any means, but moving way from complete amateur. If anything I do not like this development, or I would like if in addition to this they had tournaments with lower price pools that would attract other casual teams like us.
These "community games" or "fun tournaments" don't work at all, partly because of terrible communication. Bob misses the forums, the forums were nice, but I honestly think that less than 10% of the lan goers went there. I walked up to people in the hall I saw playing PUBG and asked if they played on the local server, and not a single person I asked even knew of it's existence. (They would then go on, see that there were only 20 people, and then never come back...)
If it was a bit more official and you could win £500 and some t-shirts then I think lan would be a lot more fun.

Most fun lan = dota lan still.

Both of them, the first with an even more ragtag team was some fantastic levels of punching above our weight. Granted I played the then super-OP bounty hunter every game, but still.
My main memory of those games still being CSaur (seated next to me) Dazzle getting chased down by an Axe towards our T3's, but being low and battle-hungered never going to make it. The shouts went: oh, oh, aaah, AAAA<cast of shallow grave>AAA<the dunk happens>aaah.... <general laughter>. I believe we eventually went on to win that game. Not a very unique moment in the world at large, but we were so hype at the time that it sort of stuck in my mind.
Was Bob no-boots-but-Blink Sven tp'ing to lanes to gank first or second Dota lan? It worked for a good bit
-
Bad:
- PUBG was mostly a faliure, as explained above.
- No Dota tournament, or anything else I play.
- The queues on Thursday, and the subsequent internet speed for downloading games on the rentals. (I may as well have arrived Friday morning).
- Low interest from people to actually play games.... as always (do people come to lan to browse reddit?).
- Turnout poor from our group compared to normal, which also made playing random games or getting a stack going harder.
- Saturday.
Good
- D&D
- Pub Quiz - better than last year, but where has video games soundtracks, and video game related questions gone?
- I-hunt. However I wasn't in tune with the rest of the team most of the time.
- The exhibition. If you stayed away from the Fortnite area you could have actually do stuff there this year!
- Turn up and play Toilets contest. I completely underestimated this, and I only took part once on the final day.
- Scribble (or whatever it was called)!
Ugly
- b0nes' hangover!

To be honest, I was disappointed with the lack of game playing too. I've been finding it really hard to get back into the community these days since I retired (I might be making it sound like I was better than I really was) from dota, and haven't really had the time to invest into new games in recent years. PUBG looks fun to watch, but isn't my kind of game to play. Not many people play Overwatch between us, and I don't think there's anything else I play with the rest of you any more.
I actually ended up getting really down this LAN with not being able to play games with everyone because I just didn't know what to play. The ihunt was great to do together, but I think it ended up frustrating at points and I couldn't just go play a game to clear my mind because I had nothing to play.
I do miss the days of competitive gaming, it felt like I really squeezed every minute of gaming in that I could.
That said, Scrawl was awesome, Golf was good, and on the Monday morning, Overcooked was fantastic fun, more games like that would be great, and more board/card games!

It was this one in Coventry where my throat got sore from shouting during the game (and ODPixel was there).
-
Yeah 2nd Dota lan was when we discovered Silencer and Necro were pretty good.
-
Got the feedback survey in my email. Don't forget to fill that out, most importantly the part about what games you want to see in the future! (Quake and Dota)
-
I filled mine out, and I didn't even go, so the people who were there has very few excuses.
For the lack of cohesive gaming at lan; feels like it been a bit of a slow year for obvious new games to pick up as a group also, so I have some hope that this can turn around yet. Last year was PUBG, and in retrospect I should obviously have immediately bought it upon seeing what a big deal it was. For future years I will be a bit quicker bandwagoning.
-
Yep filled mine out, pretty much consisted of bring back dota2 and a forum so people can keep track of subjects of interest to them since discord is not meant for that.
-
I posted this in discord already:
Good:
- Meeting back up with friends that I've not seen since last summer!
- Playing Scrawl (can very much recommend this its like if pictionary and chinese whispers had an x-rated baby)
- Golf with friends
- Lan hall was mostly good - internet worked fine all event.
- Queues were not too bad.
- Getting to play DnD
- Ihunt! So much fun.
- Dancing with friends after pub quiz - would love this to go on abit longer.
- Qjacker Curry was great, weatherspoons food also good.
Bad:
- Lan hall was a little cold - though I think I ended up under a vent which was a little unfortunate.
- Prices for cider had gone up PLUS cans being reduced to 440ml from 500ml as well. They also tried to deliver me a crate of kronenberg and asked me to sign for it while they changed it to the strongbow i ordered. Was like 'er no'
- Stage not being put on seating plan.
- Qjacker pizza was disappointing.
- My spine from lack of a proper bed.
- Raffle drawing - kiddies megaphone did nothing. Couldn't hear, couldn't see. Gave up and went back to desk.
Ugly:
- NO FORUMS! Discord is ok but really missing the forums for updates on stuff that can be seen more than a few hours after its posted. Feel this really needs to be recfified - like I didn't know about the LANLOOT code or whatever it was until it was far too late.
- Stage being so god damm loud at times, it was fine the first few days then suddenly everything got turned up. If you have stage next to BYOC at least keep the volume at an acceptable level or put it on the plan so people can not sit near it. My whole desk was shaking from the bass at one point. Completely unacceptable.
- Pub Quiz theme. Feel the mark was missed on this one abit, it's been funny in previous lans because of the inuendo of it all, this time it just felt nsfw for the sake of it. Didn't enjoy it as much as a result. Did like the picture round being less complex but didnt find the pictures amusing.
-
Nearly forgot about the stage, it was indeed loud.

Whatever happened to the pub quiz results? They are not on https://www.worldfamouspubquiz.com/
