Dominions 4

So, I will not sell this too hard to people, it is detail-focused and sort of crude in so many ways (not least it is ugly), but it is a great strategy game if one likes to rather nerd out on the details, and is now discounted 66%, which makes it reasonably priced:

Don't buy it blindly, but if a total of maybe four people (three when discounting me) we can try hosting some multiplayer games (the single-player is largely trash), and see how it goes. And if not, I will keep playing with a bunch of nerdy ex-colleagues
-
No takers on this front (beyond what I have sort of heard)? There'll definitely be games to play, I believe I have signups from (friendly) weirdos I know to fill out the ranks!
-
Well it was on sale, will try it out over the weekend!
-
Oh man, not the first candidate I imagined, but a most welcome one!
As noted it is freaking clunky, and the single-player not much to work with, but I will get a multiplayer game going next week, and people can sort of feel it out. I think on some level it'll suit you, as it is a game where rather personal crazy strategies often work out great (the space for possible approaches is large enough that most of what one reads on the internet tends to be in principle correct, but often very narrowminded).
-
I did pick it up, I just haven't had chance to even install it yet
-
You can take a minute and read the manual before you get to the installing stage though: http://www.illwinter.com/dom4/manual_dom4.pdf

The best trick to playing Dominions is really to check out (the start of) some simple Let's Play of a nation that looks cool to get an idea of a starting point, then try the first few turns in a single-player game a few times to make sure one understands how to take the first few provinces (and learn the reversed meanings of left- and right-clicks and all other weird UI choices.) Then pretty much immediately leap into a small multiplayer game with a sink-or-swim attitude.
-
People getting the moment to kick the tires? I wont rush anyone, but it would be a true shame to fool you into getting the game and then not fool you into trying it out!

A quick cheat sheet for buying pixelmans, with all the graphical fidelity we expect from Dominions:

In actual guides, I think Bob has also taken a quick look at the game at this point, so may be worth getting a game set up:
A good overview of the game, with a look at the nation Vanheim (based in Norse mythology, the Vanir were opposition to the aesir gods): http://www.moddb.com/games/dominions-3-the-awakening/forum/thread/pretender-design-101-for-beginners

As before, a game where I think one does well to figure out what is good and not (so don't worry about reading a bunch of stuff), but may be good posts to glance through it nothing much makes sense.
-
Hrm, not doing well on this front. @Black-Bob and @CSaur, up for just leaping in for a game? It is very small time investment to try out as noted.
-
Currently have no Internet access until next month, relying on my phones data for a while so not sure if I'll be on before then
-
Dominions is pretty good for that though, need a few megs for the first move (to download the map) but then it is all small sips to get the turn and submit your orders. If you prefer to hold off though I'll settle for not feeling bad I let things languish
