Migrating to a tiny little box
-
In the coming weeks somewhere I will migrate the forums (and some related software/sites) onto a little microserver in my apartment. Only reason it has been professionally hosted up to now is that I have not had that permanent an address, but now that I plan to stick in this apartment indefinitely I will save some money and put the forums on some tiny box.
This will mean a day or so of outage, and then after that reliability will probably be a touch worse (e.g. power outages are more likely in an apartment than in professionally run a datacenter in Frankfurt). Otoh it will mean way more powerful hardware (even spending almost no money), and as it will have no real running costs on the margin it will be around indefinitely.
Honestly I feel like Discord has been pretty fully adopted in a very good way, but as you never know what tomorrow will bring it is best keep backups around.
-
So if the forum is down in the future we know who's at fault.
-
Haha, yep agree with Vaette I think everyone's currently using discord, but its amazing how one little change in the company in the future could stop us all using it.
-
The new box has arrived:
As you can see only the most professional of hardware accepted.
-
Finally finalizing the migration today, it will not be smooth as changing the DNS records will take some time to propagate, and other issues may pop up.
-
my anti virus told me this wasn't a secure connection apparently

Yep, your ISP DNS server apparently got updated before mine did. Needed to update the certificates on the new host (done with the excellent free Let's Encrypt service, support the EFF people!), but that requires that it can probe the domain to make sure you own it, and I needed DNS to clear out before that.
As far as I know things are now working however, and I will start backing up and deleting the virtual machine we have used up to now.

ah okay fair enough!
-
The end of an era.
Well, not much of one. End of monthly bills at any rate
-
haha

Can you make it possible to edit old posts? It is not possible to edit posts more than 3600 seconds after posting it.
-
Sure, should be infinite now.
-
now we have to find the post that tango edited to insult someone somewhere

Five more years at least:
Need to actually configure backup, I didn't get around to it when doing the migration.
-
OK, thanks to James never showing up for DOTA backups are now up and running.
-
And now migrated to a slightly larger box! In the interest of box consolidation mostly
In the process I have managed to change the emoji into their android blob variants somehow, not sure why. It is not very surprising however, as just about every fragment of software involved has changed in the process.
